Booked in for bloodwork? Say that you take biotin. A two-gummy serving carries 5000 mcg of it, roughly 167 times the daily value, and at that level biotin can push several routine lab assays off their true reading. The nutrient is not hurting you; the number on the report is what goes wrong. Read the safety page.

The Six

The Gelagen ingredients people ask about

Five nutrients from the panel and the base they are set in.

Eggs, walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and vegetables, foods that carry biotin

Biotin

5000 mcg · 16,667% DV

The headline number on the panel and the reason most people pick a gummy like this one up. Biotin is a B vitamin your body uses when it builds keratin, the protein that nails and hair are made of.

  • Listed at 5000 mcg in every two-gummy serving
  • Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails
  • High enough to matter at a blood draw — see the safety page
Leafy greens, citrus, beans, broccoli and avocado, foods that carry folate

Folate

442 mcg DFE · 111% DV

Printed on the panel as 260 mcg of folic acid, which converts to 442 mcg DFE. Folate is a cell-division vitamin, and a hair follicle divides more often than almost any other tissue you own.

  • 260 mcg folic acid, shown as 442 mcg DFE
  • Involved in normal cell division
  • Ask a doctor first if you take methotrexate
Vitamin B6 in powdered form, the pyridoxine hydrochloride used in the formula

Vitamin B6

2 mg · 118% DV

Two milligrams of pyridoxine hydrochloride. B6 sits in the middle of protein metabolism, which is the part of the job that keratin production depends on. Some affiliate pages print 7.4 mg here; the label does not.

  • 2 mg per serving, not the 7.4 mg quoted elsewhere
  • Supports normal protein and glycogen metabolism
  • The 7.4 mg on the panel belongs to vitamin E
A golden mineral fragment marked B12, representing methylcobalamin

Vitamin B12

6 mcg · 250% DV

Six micrograms as methylcobalamin, the form that needs no conversion step. B12 is the nutrient plant-based eaters run short of first, and a shortage shows up in tiredness long before it shows up in a mirror.

  • 6 mcg as methylcobalamin
  • Contributes to normal red blood cell formation
  • The form the label names, not cyanocobalamin
D-calcium pantothenate powder in a glass dish, the pantothenic acid used in the formula

Pantothenic Acid

5.2 mg · 104% DV

Vitamin B5, supplied as d-calcium pantothenate. It is a quiet entry on the panel and an unglamorous one, sitting inside the energy pathway that every dividing cell in a follicle draws on.

  • 5.2 mg as d-calcium pantothenate
  • Part of normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • Just over one hundred percent of the daily value

The Pectin Base

No gelatin · No collagen

What the nutrients are carried in. Pectin comes from fruit, so the gummy is set without gelatin. That also means there is no collagen anywhere in this bottle, whatever a third-party page may tell you.

  • Set with pectin, listed in Other Ingredients
  • Beet root extract does the colouring
  • 3 g of added sugar per two-gummy serving

Every amount taken from the printed panel.

All Thirteen

The full Gelagen nutrient list, in panel order

Vitamin A

630 mcg · 70% DV

Supplied as retinyl acetate, the preformed animal-form of the vitamin rather than beta carotene. Vitamin A is bound into the way skin cells mature and turn over, which is why retinoids — its prescription relatives — sit at the centre of dermatology. This is a nutritional amount, not a retinoid dose. Preformed vitamin A accumulates, and that is the reason the label warns pregnant women to ask a doctor first and the reason you should not run a second vitamin A supplement alongside it.

Vitamin C

20 mg · 22% DV

Ascorbic acid, and the most defensible skin entry on the whole panel. Your body cannot assemble its own collagen without vitamin C acting as a cofactor for the enzymes that stabilise the collagen triple helix. That is a real, textbook biochemical role. It is also the reason the collagen-in-a-gummy confusion around this product is so unnecessary: the formula supports the collagen you make rather than supplying any.

Vitamin D

10 mcg · 50% DV

Cholecalciferol, which is the D3 form, at 400 IU in the old units. Vitamin D receptors sit in the hair follicle and the keratinocyte, and shortage is genuinely common in anyone who works indoors or lives at latitude through winter. Half the daily value is a supporting amount, not a correction of a deficiency — that needs a blood test and a doctor.

Vitamin E

7.4 mg · 49% DV

D-alpha tocopheryl acetate, the natural-source form. Vitamin E is fat-soluble and sits in cell membranes acting as an antioxidant, which is where the skin interest comes from. Note this number: 7.4 mg is vitamin E. Several pages about this product misattribute it to vitamin B6, which is on the panel at 2 mg.

Vitamin B6

2 mg · 118% DV

Pyridoxine hydrochloride. B6 is a workhorse in amino acid metabolism, and keratin is an amino acid product, so the connection to hair and nails runs through protein handling. Very high long-term B6 intakes are associated with nerve symptoms; 2 mg is nowhere near that territory, but it is worth knowing if you take a separate B-complex as well.

Folate

442 mcg DFE · 111% DV

Printed as 260 mcg of folic acid, expressed as 442 mcg of dietary folate equivalents. Folate is required for DNA synthesis and therefore for cell division, and a follicle in its growing phase divides relentlessly. If you take methotrexate or an anticonvulsant, folate interacts with both and this is a conversation for your doctor rather than a footnote.

Vitamin B12

6 mcg · 250% DV

Methylcobalamin, which needs no conversion step in the body. B12 supports red blood cell formation, and red blood cells are what deliver oxygen to the base of every follicle. It is the first nutrient to run short on a plant-based diet, and shortage tends to announce itself as fatigue long before anything visible happens to hair.

Biotin

5000 mcg · 16,667% DV

The reason most people buy a gummy like this and the entry that needs the most care. Biotin is a coenzyme in carboxylation reactions and it is genuinely involved in keratin production. True biotin deficiency is rare and does cause hair and nail problems; correcting a deficiency you do not have is a different proposition. At 167 times the daily value this dose interferes with several laboratory immunoassays, which is a real, documented, clinically significant problem and the single most important fact on this page.

Pantothenic acid

5.2 mg · 104% DV

Vitamin B5 as d-calcium pantothenate. It is the backbone of coenzyme A, which every energy-yielding pathway in the body routes through. Nothing about it is exciting and everything about it is necessary. Just over the daily value.

Choline

0.04 mg · 0% DV

Choline bitartrate at forty micrograms, which the panel itself rounds to zero percent of the daily value. We are not going to pretend this is doing anything. It is on the label, so it is on this page, and honest reading of a panel includes the lines that do not help the sale.

Iodine

42 mcg · 28% DV

Potassium iodide. Iodine is a thyroid nutrient, and thyroid function has an obvious and well-documented effect on hair. That also makes it the entry to raise with your doctor if you have a thyroid condition or take levothyroxine, especially alongside the biotin note about thyroid blood tests.

Zinc

2.7 mg · 25% DV

Zinc citrate. Zinc is involved in wound healing, immune function and skin repair, and zinc deficiency produces recognisable skin and hair changes. A quarter of the daily value is a modest, sensible top-up rather than a therapeutic dose, and it is well below the level at which zinc starts competing with copper absorption.

Inositol

40 mcg · † DV

Carries a dagger on the panel, meaning no daily value has been established. Inositol is a sugar alcohol involved in cell signalling and it appears in a lot of beauty formulas. Forty micrograms is a very small amount. Read it as a formulation inclusion, not as an active.

Where the numbers on this page come from

Every amount above was retyped from the photograph of the Supplement Facts panel the client supplied, line by line, in the order the panel prints them. Nothing was taken from a sales page, and where a sales page disagrees with the panel this site follows the panel.

Three claims about Gelagen you will see elsewhere that are wrong

Six milligrams of biotin. The panel says 5000 mcg, which is five milligrams.
7.4 mg of vitamin B6 at 449 percent. The panel says 2 mg at 118 percent. The 7.4 mg is vitamin E.
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides. Not on the panel and not in Other Ingredients. There is no collagen in this product.

The Rest Of It

What else is in a Gelagen gummy

Other Ingredients

Corn Syrup, Water, Pure Cane Sugar, Pectin, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Sodium Citrate, Tapioca Starch, Beet Root Extract (color).

Corn syrup and cane sugar are what make a gummy a gummy, and they are why a two-gummy serving carries 3 g of added sugar. Pectin is the setting agent, which is what makes this a vegetarian gummy rather than a gelatin one. Beet root extract is the colour. There is nothing on this line that acts on skin or hair.
